The community at Saint Christina’s School was delighted to welcome Mayor of London, Mr. Boris Johnson and Councillor Duncan Sandys, Lord Mayor of Westminster, to our 60th Diamond Jubilee celebration on Friday 11th September 2009.
Mr. Johnson, renowned for his inimitable style of leadership, was invited to give a formal address to members of the school community. His words were very well received by past and present students, the Sisters in the convent who were instrumental in founding the school, and other invited guests. During his address, Mr. Johnson recounted his own school experiences and likened himself to an underperforming giraffe named Gerald that was the subject of a story time session that he viewed in a year one classroom. His speech, full of witticisms and self-deprecating humour, amused his audience to great effect. On a celebratory note, Mr. Johnson commented that Saint Christina’s is ‘a most amazing school… what incredible facilities, what incredible teachers…’ and to the young children before him as being ‘very lucky’.
Mr. Johnson officially unveiled student designed mosaics in the school playground, each of which conveyed messages about the ethos of Saint Christina’s School. Mr. Johnson toured the school and met students aged three to eleven, including our Head Girl, Miss Nadia Muccio and Deputy Head Girl, Miss Leen Yassin. This occasion follows a series of commemorative events during Saint Christina’s Diamond Jubilee Year. Earlier this year, the school community celebrated a commemorative Mass of Thanksgiving, hosted a formal reception garden party with dove release and produced an outstanding musical production that featured songs, historical images and musical soundtracks from the past six decades of the school’s history.
Mr. Johnson’s visit was eagerly anticipated by the children of our school community and was a most memorable event.
