At Saint Christina’s School, children gain experience of a range of materials, tools and techniques in their study of Design and Technology. These lessons nurture the children’s creativity and innovation as they are given the opportunity to develop their design and composition skills. Children are encouraged, through discussion with their peers, to propose solutions to design problems for themselves. An important aspect of Design and Technology lessons is that the children learn to develop a respect for the environment as well as a respect for their own health and safety, and that of others.
Through their engagement in Design and Technology work at Saint Christina’s School, children learn to critically appraise and evaluate existing products, their own work and the work of their peers. As the children progress, they acquire and refine their practical skills such as planning, measuring, cutting, joining and finishing. By the time the children reach Year 6 they are able to apply scientific, mathematical and IT skills to meet design needs which demand more complex reasoning and design solutions.
The academic year culminates in a Design and Technology Week which involves whole school enrichment activities and focused design workshops. This special week at Saint Christina’s School concludes with a special assembly and ‘sharing exhibition’ that celebrates the children’s design work and explains the design processes and techniques they have developed and employed.
The study of Design and Technology at Saint Christina’s School stimulates and challenges young minds and helps to prepare children to be forward-thinking designers of the future.
