At Saint Christina’s School, success in Literacy underpins success in all other curricular areas. Due to this significance, Literacy is a key priority area within all classrooms, and this is supported through home learning activities and extension.
Literacy at Saint Christina’s encompasses a broad range of stimulating activities and learning opportunities at all stages. Learning within classrooms is enhanced through the use of ICT and media resources within the curriculum.
Children develop their skills, knowledge and confidence through participation in a broad range of differentiated activities in the areas of:
Individual, small group and whole class activities reflect the different learning needs and styles of the children at Saint Christina’s. Children are also given many opportunities for public speaking and participation at Mass, weekly assemblies and school productions throughout the year. In addition, extra-curricula opportunities are provided for children in speech and drama, and public speaking, with the option of LAMDA speech and drama examinations.
At Saint Christina’s School we are most fortunate to have a well stocked and well resourced library to support learning within classrooms and to foster a love of reading. The library has undergone a refurbishment and continues to provide a welcoming and child-friendly environment. New resources are added constantly throughout the year according to the interests of the children.
Children at all levels of the school have regular access to the library. We are well supported by a group of dedicated parent volunteers who assist with our shared reading and library borrowing programme. Children have the opportunity to borrow on a weekly basis and to use these books both within the classroom and at home.
From Year Two onwards, the children are taught library skills by their class teacher who ensures that they understand how to locate information and resources. This enables children to independently carry out research, a life-long skill that will enhance their future education.
